From June 1, 2021, all helmets must bear the ISI logo, according to a notification from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). The issue of helmet standardization has remained a source of contention among regulatory bodies, manufacturers, and bike riders since the government first announced mandatory compliance to BIS standards in 2018. As part of this notification, the government attempted to restrict the overall permissible weight of a helmet to 1,200gm. This was a bad decision because it effectively prohibited the selling of almost all imported full-face helmets in India, despite the fact that manufacturers were able to test them to meet BIS specifications.
Now, according to the current notice, all helmets must have the ISI mark on them. However, there has been no indication as to whether or not the 1200 gm legislation will be implemented. The government will issue a notification in this regard.
